How to Clean a Coated Garage Floor

The whole program fits on an index card. Sweep. Squeegee the slush out in winter. Mop a few times a year. Don't drag steel across it.

How to Clean and Maintain a Coated Garage Floor

Routine

  • Sweep with a soft push broom or shop vac.
  • Winter: squeegee slush and brine out the door so it doesn't dry into a salt slurry. Rinse in spring.
  • Mop with warm water and a little dish soap or a neutral cleaner a few times a year. Rinse.

Spills

Oil, coolant, gas, brake fluid and fertilizer wipe up with a rag and a degreaser. The floor is non-porous, so nothing soaks in — but wipe it up in a day or two rather than a month.

Avoid

  • Citrus or solvent-based cleaners in quantity
  • Dragging sharp steel — jack stands without pads, steel shovel edges, snow chains
  • Welding directly on the floor without a mat
  • Parking in the first 48 hours

Years in

If tire lines dull after a decade, a scuff-and-recoat of the topcoat brings the floor back for a fraction of the original cost. How long coatings last.
