Hot-Tire Pickup — Coating Peeling Where the Tires Sit

Four clean rectangles of bare concrete, one under each tire, with the coating stuck to the tread. That's hot-tire pickup, and it happens to thin, under-bonded coatings every July along the Wasatch Front.

Hot-Tire Pickup

What's happening

A tire coming off the freeway in summer can hit 140°F. On a coating that's thin, not fully cured, or sitting on unprofiled concrete, that heat softens the film and the tire's plasticizers bond to it; when the tire cools and the car backs out, the coating comes with it. It's most common on DIY kits and etched floors, and it shows up in the first or second summer.

Why properly installed polyaspartic doesn't do this

  • Diamond-ground concrete gives the base coat a mechanical anchor.
  • A polyurea base coat penetrates instead of sitting on top.
  • Polyaspartic stays hard at tire temperatures.
  • A 25+ mil system has the mass to shrug off heat.
  • Full cure before vehicles — about 48 hours.

The fix

Grind off the entire failed coating (not just the tire spots), moisture-test, repair, and install the full system. Hot-tire pickup is explicitly covered under our 15-Year warranty because it should never happen on a properly installed floor.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I just recoat the four spots?

No — the rest of the floor has the same weak bond and will lift next. Full removal and reinstall.

Do I need to wait before parking on a new floor?

About 48 hours. Parking sooner is the one way to get pickup on a good floor.
